About Us

The Leotard Project

The Leotard Project finds new homes for gently used dancewear, including leotards, tights, shoes, and accessories. In addition to collecting items in donation bins located in participating dance studios, we raise funds to supplement our inventory through individual donations. We then offer this dancewear to aspiring dancers who need it. Contact us if you wish to give or receive!

Our Mission

The Leotard Project removes economic barriers by providing dancewear to aspiring dancers from underserved communities and promotes environmental sustainability by recycling dancewear so more children can experience the joy of dance.

Our Story

If you are a dancer, or the parent of a young dancer, you know how quickly kids outgrow leotards, tights, and shoes. Add to that all of the leotards that we purchase for recitals and performances and rarely wear again. As I sorted through all of the dance attire in my own closet, I became concerned by the quantity of items that I no longer used or needed and how my gently-used dancewear would likely end up in a landfill, even if donated to an organization like Goodwill Industries. It also came to mind how many families cannot financially keep up with the dozens of new leotards and costumes required for a dance education on top of payments for dance classes. To alleviate these issues, The Leotard Project organizes the collection of pre-owned leotards, tights, shoes, and skirts and finds new homes for them with young dancers who need these items. Dancing has played an important role in my life, teaching me physical and mental discipline and bringing me great joy. I want to help more children enjoy the opportunity to dance.
